Howl
How many birds have flown this way? I keep looking for a sign, Hoping to find you in woods grown thick between us. I hear wolves and wonder, When did we lose our way? Tears glitter like snow, and I grow cold Waiting for a sign. This suffocating chill has burrowed in my bones. Winter’s wolves bare teeth And snatch the songs that warmed our wings, And I trade teeth for our shared feathers. I keep looking for a sign, Footprints leading me to you, a long time ago, When wolves didn’t howl And being lost in the woods was just a fairy tale. When the moon shone bright for us, And the signs held no hint of blood. When we were birds searching for the spring. And wolves had other birds to kill. And I howl, waiting for a sign.
